From expert panel to practical clinical guidelines
In June 2021, the first systematic review resulting from the three-year debate of the expert panel was published in the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. The focus of this first paper was the use of robotic rehabilitation in stroke patients, as this population represents the main user of these innovative devices.
Several working groups of the Consensus Conference, in which the MBE team participated, systematically evaluated the articles retrieved from database surveys and synthesized the results. We found evidence supporting the use of robotic rehabilitation to increase functional performances also in the most compromised patients. Robotic devices should support conventional physical therapy, in addition to other rehabilitation techniques. The best results are obtained when patients are still in the sub-acute phase, in the first 3-6 months after the stroke.
