The CICERONE Conference on robotic rehabilitation in neurologic patients

In 2019-2021 MBE team attended the Italian Consensus Conference – CICERONE, promoted by SIMFER (Italian Society of Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine) and SIRN (Italian Society of Neurologic Rehabilitation), to discuss the current and future employment of robotic devices in rehabilitation (check out the related post here).

Practical guidelines were firstly published focusing on the stroke population, since these patients are the largest segment of the population who undergo this type of rehabilitation (we talked about it in another post).

New focus on multiple sclerosis

Given the promising results of robotic rehabilitation in this population, we shifted our focus on new pathologies, particularly degenerative ones. Patients with these types of disorders require different interventions, usually prolonged over time to accompany them throughout the different stages of their disease.

We are now pleased to share the news of the publication of a new systematic review on the use of robotic rehabilitation for patients with multiple sclerosis, written by the expert panel of which Andrea Merlo was a member. Lower limb robotic devices seem to improve functional walking abilities, especially in patients with a more severe disability.

This comprehensive study paves the way for new investigations to improve assistive care through new technologies and treatment accuracy.
