What is the SIAMOC?

SIAMOC is the Italian Society of Motion Analysis in Clinics established in 1999 in Pisa.

The aim of the Society is to promote the study and application of new techniques for clinical motion and gait analysis, improving:

  • Assessment protocols and their specificity
  • The decision-making process for treatment planning
  • Objective quantification of treatment results

SIAMOC is included in the list of scientific societies accredited by the Italian Ministry of Health for drafting guidelines to be followed by health professionals in clinical practice.

A variety of professions, including MDs of different specialties, Physical Therapists, Kinesiologists, and Bioengineers can join SIAMOC. With such a professional mix at its core, SIAMOC is the proof of the potential of multidisciplinary teams in combining expertise together.

MerloBioEngineering at SIAMOC

Every year the SIAMOC Congress is held at an Italian city. Bari will host the 2022 congress on October 5th – 8th!

The conference is dedicated to registered members and involves Lectiones Magistrales and the presentation of posters and abstracts of clinical and methodological work concerning the applications of gait analysis in rehabilitation. You can find the whole program here.

This year, Andrea Merlo, as member of two research teams from the Azienda USL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia and the Sol et Salus Hospital of Torre Pedrera (RI), will present three research studies:

  • “Automatic identification of muscle overactivity in acute stroke patients at rest. A validation study”;
  • “Added value of the instrumented Timed-Up and Go test (iTUG) in the long-term assessment of PD patients with bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS)”;
  • “Gait deviation index to quantify the effect of functional surgery on walking kinematics in stroke patients”.
