The SMARTherapy+ project
On the 13th of October, I had the privilege of delivering a presentation at the SMARTherapy+ event, a European initiative generously supported by the Erasmus+ program. The project aims to address critical training gaps within the field of physiotherapy, with a particular focus on gait rehabilitation across various areas of Europe. The Organization focuses on creating a collaborative consortium comprising several educational institutions working with shared targets and principles.
The event, organized with the esteemed Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, bore the title “State of the Art and Knowledge of the Function of Walking and New Therapeutic Perspectives.”
Distinguished colleagues such as Prof. Roberto Gatti, Humanitas Hospital and Humanitas University, Milan, and Dr. Maurizio Petrarca, “Bambin Gesù” Hospital, Rome, attended the conference with their presentations.

The use of gait analysis and electromyography
During my presentation, I explained the multifaceted roles of gait analysis and surface electromyography, particularly in managing patients afflicted by neurological, sports-related, and gynecological conditions. The presentations catalyzed a vibrant discussion among participants about the intricate relationship between technology and rehabilitation, and explored the promising future of these tools in patient care.
The role of technology in patient care
We find ourselves in an era where technology is around every corner of our daily lives, and healthcare is by no means immune to this transformative influence. In the field of gait rehabilitation, we are witnessing a progressive change in our approach to treating motor impairments. This paradigm shift is not only attributed to the advent of technologies, offering therapists a variety of tools for comprehensive and objective assessments, alongside innovative modes of therapy implementation. It is equally supported by the potential of such technologies to enhance our comprehension of the complex mechanisms underlying such impairments. This may become a stimulus to the generation of innovative hypotheses and foster the conception of new ideas in the area of rehabilitation.
Engaging with luminaries and scholars within the field is always a cherished opportunity to exchange insights and grow professionally through the collective wisdom of our peers.
