From November 22nd to 24th, the entire MerloBioEngineering team participated in the IV AIFI (Italian Physiotherapy Association) Congress, held in Florence.

Oral and poster presentations, to which the MBE team contributed, were exhibited during the event. We will discuss them in two separate posts.

MBE at the IV AIFI Congress: a lecture on sEMG

Andrea Merlo, founder of MBE, was also invited to give a lecture titled “Surface Electromyography: A Resource for Clinical and Research in Rehabilitation.”

During the presentation, Dr Merlo outlined the history of surface electromyography, from its early developments to the present days. He discussed its uses in clinical and research, as well as the new frontiers being developed in recent years.

In his talk, Dr Merlo showed the main uses of sEMG in neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, highlighting its importance in the decision-making process and making patients more aware of their bodies through biofeedback. He also outlined the main innovative uses of sEMG, including the study of muscle synergy, EMG signal decomposition, and use in gynecology.

Dr Merlo’s presentation was a true journey through history, in which we retraced the key milestones of sEMG development, understood what led to the current technologies, and envisioned future applications that will enhance clinical practice and research in rehabilitation.

We are proud to have contributed to such a high-quality congress. We shared our expertise and learnt from the experiences of others. It is through confrontation and collaboration that new, great ideas are born!
