A Case Report on Parkinson’s Disease
This case study, resulting from a clinical intuition of Isabella Campanini, PhD, Head of the LAM – Motion Analysis Laboratory of the Azienda USL-IRCCS di Reggio Emila was awarded with the Best Clincal Case price at the ESMAC Congress. It focused on the diagnostic pathway of a woman with Parkinson’s Disease who exhibited an atypical gait pattern.
It was precisely the integration of movement analysis with surface electromyography that helped identify neuromuscular anomalies, prompting a neurology consultation and subsequent genetic screening.
This screening revealed a rare genetic variant, ultimately leading to the diagnosis of a hereditary degenerative disorder. The comprehensive assessment, initiated through instrumental gait analysis, triggered a broader family screening, which identified other healthy carriers of the same variant.
