On November 10th and 11th, the third AIFI (Italian Association of Physiotherapy) Congress 2023 took place in Bologna, under the theme “Tailored Physiotherapy: a strategy for the future.” The congress aimed to analyze the customized approach in physiotherapy by contextualizing and personalizing guidelines for each patient.
The future of physiotherapy
Observing numerous physiotherapists engaging in discussions across various rehabilitation domains, from neurological and musculoskeletal patients to athletes, oncology, cardiorespiratory, and pediatrics, was enriching even for us bioengineers. The discussions covered the impact of new digital technologies, big and synthetic data, cause-effect paradigms, and innovative assessment scales.
There were also talks by bioengineers, philosophers of science, and anthropologists: multidisciplinary teamwork is the future!

The role of MerloBioEngineering
MerloBioEngineering participated behind the scenes in several abstracts presented during the congress, collaborating with the Movement Analysis Laboratory of the Azienda USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia and the Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory of Sol et Salus Hospital in Rimini.
The work titled “Timed-Up and Go Instrumented in the Long-Term Assessment of Patients with Parkinson’s Disease with Bilateral Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation” received the award for the best clinical research poster. We already published some papers on this topic.
Heartfelt congratulations to President Dr. Isabella Campanini for the high quality of the organized Congress and for being the first woman president, paving the way for young female researchers in this field!
