The MerloBioEngineering team participated in a systematic review titled “Instrumental Balance Assessment in Parkinson’s Disease and Parkinsonism: A Systematic Review with Critical Appraisal of Clinical Applications and Quality of Reporting” in a Research Topic of Frontiers in Neurology, Neurorehabilitation.

Our experience with balance assessment in Parkinson’s Disease

At the Movement Analysis Laboratory of the Azienda USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia, we examine approximately 200 patients with Parkinson’s disease or atypical Parkinsonism each year using a comprehensive balance protocol.

This includes trials with eyes open and closed, on firm and soft surfaces, and under dual-task conditions.

When we started comparing our results with those published in the literature, we realized there was substantial heterogeneity. Many research groups use different protocols without specifying their details, which makes these studies non-reproducible.

New paper published

Our new systematic review critically appraised the use of static posturography in patients with Parkinson’s disease, examining the clinical, technical, and methodological aspects while identifying gaps that hinder its translation into clinical practice.

We aim to provide practical and valuable guidelines for clinicians who work daily with patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease and researchers who publish papers on posturography.
