We had already shared the exciting news about our contribution to the ESMAC – European Society for Movement Analysis in Adults and Children – where we presented a project developed using our software, EMG Easy Report.

The results were so compelling that we showcased the same work at another major event: the SIAMOC 2025 Congress (the Italian Society of Motion Analysis in Clinics). The meeting was held in the beautiful city of Cagliari from October 1 to 4.

Another oral session for Doris and EMG Easy Report

Our study was once again chosen for an oral presentation at SIAMOC.

Dr. M.Chiara Bò, from the MBE team, took the stage to describe the collaborative effort between MerloBioEngineering, the MARLab at Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, and Sol et Salus Hospital.

A group of healthy participants walked on a mobile platform, Doris, developed by Dr. Maurizio Petrarca’s team. The platform could stay stable or unexpectedly yield under the participant’s weight. Moreover, the participants were unaware of which condition they would encounter.

We measured the activity of the soleus, gastrocnemius, and tibialis anterior muscles using surface electromyography (sEMG). Then, we analyzed the data with our EMG Easy Report, supplemented with custom filters designed to remove motion artifacts, particularly important during platform-unstable behavior. Finally, mixed model statistical methods were used in the data analysis.

Postural strategies revealed by sEMG

We identified anticipatory and ongoing postural strategies that participants adopted when responding to predictable or unpredictable perturbations. sEMG enabled us to distinguish between these responses by comparing muscle activity under different conditions.

This benchmark of healthy behavior establishes a foundation for future comparisons with populations at risk of falling. This may lead to the development of more effective rehabilitation strategies.

More to come from SIAMOC 2025

This wasn’t the only project we presented at the SIAMOC Congress this year.
