New publication

The LAM (Motion Analysis Laboratory) of Correggio, directed by Dr. Isabella Campanini, recently published a new paper in collaboration with the Neurology Unit of the Azienda USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia.

From sudden events come opportunities

This work stems from an unusual incident that occurred during one of the many gait exams performed at the Laboratory.

A patient with stiff-person syndrome unexpectedly experienced an acute episode lasting about 12 seconds. This was characterized by lower extremity stiffness with retropulsion during a routine assessment. It involved tonic co-contraction of the plantarflexor muscles and tibialis anterior, reinforced by irregular phasic activity (i.e., bursts).

This event provided us with the opportunity to analyze her muscle activations using surface electromyography both during the episode and in response to it in the subsequent minutes. The latter included a significant activation of bilateral tibialis anterior muscles to counteract retropulsion.

Our software at your service

We used EMG Easy Report, our custom-developed software, to visualize and analyze electromyographic data, as shown in the figure embedded in the manuscript.

Collaboration is our motto

This work was made possible through ongoing collaboration with the Neurology Unit and teamwork with Dr. Francesco Cavallieri and his staff. We have discussed other work published together in several posts, like this one.
