Our consultancy for the study of the Charcot Marie Tooth

MBE does not only deal with the development of software, database or with the scientific research.

It also provides consultancy services for private individuals, institutions or public bodies who wish to initiate research projects but need guidance on structuring and planning the work.

This is the case of the collaboration with the ACMT-Rete Foundation, the association for the study and support of Charcot Marie Tooth patients, and the Movement Analysis Laboratory of the Department of Rehabilitation of the Bozzolo Hospital (ASST of Mantua), directed by Dr. Francesco Ferraro in August 2018.

Advice on several areas

The aim of the consultancy was to review the clinical and instrumental data already available to the team in order to determine how they could be used for research purposes.

Following an on-site meeting with the local staff, MBE reviewed the clinical and instrumental material collected in the previous years in quantitative and qualitative terms, providing proposals for the improvement of the database and for the organisation of data collection in the future, starting from the strengths of the working team and of the method they used so far.

This led to the proposal of different types of studies to be carried out with the data already available, all with a clinically relevant impact in the field of rehabilitation, in order to monitor and evaluate the Charcot Marie Tooth patients during the several phases of their life and after the different rehabilitative interventions they may undergo.

Finally, the best journals to submit papers to were selectedaccording with the Association’s objectives, as well as the best way to be able to undertake more methodologically complex studies in the future, such as the efficacy ones. Moreover, the procedures to be followed in dealing with the Local Ethics Committee were outlinedfor future studies requiring its approval.

The first study published from the consultancy

The productive collaboration between ACMT-ReteDr. Francesco Ferraro, PT Irene Carantini and MBE has already led to the publication of a study in just six months: MBE carried out the statistical analysis and coordinated the entire writing of the paper, leading the local team.

The study has already been described in a separate post and can be entirely viewed at the link.
